Bobby Orr Boston Bruins Game Used Puck May 16th 1974 Stanley Cup Finals Goal Puck From The NHL Goal Puck Program

In 1972 the founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter. Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that revealed which team-goal the puck accounted for.

This particular puck was used by HOF superstar Bobby Orr to score the Boston Bruins 56th playoff goal of the season, in Game 5 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals, at Boston Garden, on May 16, 1974. Assisted by Dallas Smith and Ken Hodge, it was the icon’s 4th playoff goal of the season, and 25th of his 26 career playoff markers. Scored at 16:55 of the second to put Boston up by two, the Bruins would add a pair in the third for a 5-1 victory at home. In the video of Orr scoring this exact goal, the iconic point slap shot Orr was famous for, notches this beauty past the Flyers net minder. Orr would score the game-winning goal in the second at 12:06, and with an assist in the first, finished with a three-point night. The Flyers would take the series and Stanley Cup in six games. The puck remains in beautiful condition, with just a minor cut through the Bruins rubberized logo. Bobby Orr changed the game when he broke into the NHL in 1966. His end to end rushes and prolific scoring from the defenceman position, had never been seen before. He took the league by storm and scored 13 goals and added 28 assists which gave him the Calder Cup, awarded to the leagues top rookie performer. Orr was second in the Norris trophy race in that rookie season, awarded to the top defenceman.  He would go on to win that award 8 times in a row over the next 8 years after changing the role of the position. Very few players have come along in the NHL to make such an impact and Orr was the man who did.

Bobby Orr, a 1979 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, won the Calder Trophy as the top rookie in the NHL in 1966-67; the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the League eight times (still a record) in eight seasons, from 1967-68 through 1974-75; the Art Ross Trophy as the top scorer in the NHL in 1969-70 and 1974-75, the only defenseman ever to win it; the Hart Trophy as League MVP in 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72; and the Conn Smythe in both Stanley Cup-winning seasons as the MVP of the playoffs.  Add to those honors his MVP award at the 1976 Canada Cup, his nine points having led that tournament.

And then there was "The Goal," immediately a proper noun in Boston, that Orr scored 40 seconds into overtime of Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup Final against the St. Louis Blues.  Tripped by Blues defenseman Noel Picard, Orr took flight in front of St. Louis goalie Glenn Hall an instant after having scored the Cup winner, arms outstretched, howling with joy.  He was frozen in midair in what would become one of hockey's most famous photographs, his flight immortalized in a statue outside Boston's TD Garden.
