Gerald “Deep” Smith is a former member of the famed Harlem Globetrotters, who were known for their athleticism, theater, entertainment and comedy in their style of play. He graduated from Detroit in 1973 and was drafted by the Carolina Cougars of the former American Basketball Association. Unfortunately, he did not make the cut and after a few attempts at professional basketball a friend persuaded him to try out for the Globetrotters, suggesting that being paid to travel the U.S. and the world and play basketball might be a sweet deal. At the age of 25 Gerald Smith became a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, jersey No. 44 after being noticed a training camp by Meadowlark Lemon, the most famous Globetrotter of all time. Smith garnered the nickname “Deep” because, it is said that he used that word for the first time when he heard that he was going to be a Globetrotter, and he’d been half-unaware that whenever he saw something impressive in an exotic foreign country he’d say, wow that’s deep. He first played with the club in 1976 and after 4 seasons in 1980 he hung up the high tops for good at the age of 29 as his knees just could not take the rigors of the game. A rare 7-footer, he was a beast out there for the team.
