Wayne Gretzky Northland Game Used Stick Oilers WHA 1978 - 1979

This Wayne Gretzky Northland stick was given to a then 9-year-old named Derek in 1978 after a game in Edmonton. You can see the early faded signature, signed after that game of the great one "To Derek Best Wishes Wayne Gretzky". This is the best conditioned Northland we have seen from that season, no chips or cracks at all. The tape was removed from the blade and has left the marks of being covered for many years making the blade look newer in that area. Gretzky did not use much if any tape during this era while using these rare Northlands. Nice use on this now 47 year old artifact as you can see puck marks all over the blade and slash marks down the lower shaft. 99 in big black marker at the knob tape which is missing a small strip of tape exposing the proper black bulldog tape under the white hockey variety, with the knob tape now darkened from use and age. Gretzky stamped in bold on both sides of the upper shaft near the knob tape. His 1978-79 season was spent in part with the Indianapolis Racers and mostly the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA. This rare Northland 7055 pattern stick also carries the cursive Gretzky in pencil, which was done at the factory to denote his sticks on the assembly line. The Northland production code of 425045 is also stamped under the shaft. Perfect game use and in excellent condition with a period autograph of the greatest player in NHL history, makes this a very special stick to add to a Gretzky collection.

Wayne Gretzky played 20 seasons in the NHL for four teams from 1979 to 1999, retiring at the age of 38. Nicknamed "the Great One", he has been called the greatest ice hockey player ever by many sportswriters, players, The Hockey News, and the NHL itself, based on extensive surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches. Gretzky is the leading career goal scorer, assist producer and point scorer in NHL history, and has more career assists than any other player has total points. He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, Gretzky tallied over 100 points in 15 professional seasons, 13 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records.
