Wayne Gretzky 1772 Point

One of the rarest Wayne Gretzky sticks around as this is the stick that he used to notch his 1772nd NHL point to pass Marcel Dionne. At the time this point was scored, Gretzky was in second all time behind Gordie Howe. Today, only 3 other players have passed this mark. They are Ron Francis, Mark Messier and Jaromir Jagr.  The game was played on January 21, 1989 and the stick date coding shows the stick was made for Wayne on December 20, 1988. This stick is one of 4 that have ever been used to get 1772 points and obviously the only Gretzky stick with this designation. Sticks like this don’t come along at all so to have it in the game used only collection, is a rare treat. Gretz had 4 points on this night in a a 5-4 loss to the Hartford Whalers.

No player will reach Wayne Gretzky’s NHL points total of  2,857 although Jarmoir Jagr is still tallying points, he’s at 1,888, still 969 points behind the Great One. Amazing to think of this point total when you see how far the next player is behind.

This stick was originally obtained from the LA Kings equipment man in 2011. He has taped up the stick with SAVE THIS marked on it along with 2nd All Time Scoring noted along the tape on the shaft. Great use on this stick would suggest he used it till he passed Dionne then switched twigs. I will find out which assist of the three was the 1772 point.
